Let's Have an Argument!

Since it wasn't really applicable when it came up, we tabled this argument last Sunday game. Besides, this is what Innernets Forums are for, right? Arguments!

Keith, why do you say you wouldn't be able to use 2 metamagic rods of the same type in the same day?

  1. I have done some asking around on the Paizo forums.

The conclusion was that you can use each rod three times a day. You may own as many as you like. You may only use one rod to enhance a spell. I am prepared to run it like this until it is shown to be an abuse.

The way the items read it suggests that it is three time a day per wielder. It should be three times a day period regardless of how the item may be passed around.

That said, the basis for my original argument was that metamagic feats are meant to increase the power and effectiveness of spells. That is why they cost a higher level spell slot to cast when used. The metamagic rods allow the caster to use the benefit of the feat without need to spend a feat slot and without need to adjust the level of the spell’s slot. All it really costs is gold and one of the daily uses of the rod. This grants the caster access to spell potential that they might not have access to until many levels later. I am not convinced that the GP cost outweighs the feat slot and spell slot increase.

  2. Ohhh no I read it as 3 per day per rod. Yeah the other way would be borken.

By the time one can afford 14k for a single magic item, you are fighting enough monsters with SR to balance it out.
